Friday Night Magic Results For August 20th 2010

Alrighty then it's been a while since i've done one of these FNM wrap ups for the usual week i tend to go to these things, so let's get started with the basics, it's been about 2 months since i've been there and such, so i was bound to get a bit rusty since of course i had not played in so long, so let's go.

The draft deck itself was a Red/White based burn aggresion strategy, with some small creatures and of course big bombs with burn and such, with some red creatures being very powerful for a cheap cost, i felt it was good but the matchups were a terrible choice since i faced nothing but control and a mirror match the entire night.

Lands
1 Rootbound Crag
8 Plains
6 Mountains

Creatures
3 Squadron Hawk
2 Goldenglow Moth
1 Berserkers of Blood Ridge
1 Roc Egg
1 Assault Griffin
1 Chandra's Spitfire
1 Arc Runner
1 War Priest of Thune
1 Ajani's Pridemate

Spells
2 Lava Axe
2 Celestial Purge
1 Inspired Charge
1 Chandra's Outrage
1 Ajani's Mantra
1 Pyretic Ritual
1 Holy Strength
1 Dragon's Claw
1 Lightning Bolt
1 Safe Passage
1 Volcanic Strength

Let's now go over the rounds that were played on this particular night in question so let's go over each of the rounds one by one in order too

Round 1 Vs Green/Blue Control/Aggro

Game 1 this was fun, i managed to get all three hawks on, with inspired charge, swinging for the win in the air with no major threats, not bad, not bad 1-0 round 1 so far, Game 2 was a more close one, got none of the hawks, got some beaters in, but not enough damage to win the round entirely meaning my opponent made me scoop due to this fact i was on 4 life facing down 8 power worth and only 1 blocker, not good 1-1 at this point. Game 3 was the best thus far, both of us pushed our decks to the limit, he getting his combos off, me dealing damage and destroying him, bringing it down to the final minute of the last round before i said Good game and scooped leaving my opponent with a victory

0-1 at this point, round 2 was a bye so i got a win automatically, not complaining here onto round 3.

Round 3 Vs Red/White Aggro

Game 1 total blowout, got screwed via land and ended up scooping rather quickly once he got 2 serra angels down, literally only 4 creatures the entire game, not good, 0-1 at this point, if you followed my twitter i ranted on this match due to the fact the opponent declared i was stacking the deck, aka cheating when i was shuffling normally and refused to let him cut, the match ended shortly after because i refused to let him cut, so 1-2 was the record up to now, not a good start to FNM again

I decided to drop round 4 because frankly i wasn't gonna win nothing, as well as it was getting late so overall a eventful night, i only rare drafted one rare overall and it was a mana fixer for emergencies, i felt i could have done a bit better in the draft, there is always next time right, anyhoo this is vergil signing off for this one

Friday Night Magic Results For June 18th 2010

Alright so this week i managed to attend yet another FNM event down at 401 games again, this week though was a bit different, i was heading into this one, planning to draft a blue control deck in this format which is super powerful, i even got my wish let's start with the basics, the decklist

Lands

5 Plains
10 Islands
2 Evolving Wilds

I felt the 2 evolving wilds were important as if i drew one on turn one i could fix the mana base to get what was needed for the entire tournament and i was correct in believing so, since i drew one every single turn one for 2 matches straight, Now let's move onto the creatures and spells of the deck in general which are quite a few

Creatures
3 Champion's Drake
2 Venerated Teacher
1 Halimar Wavewatch
1 Frostwind Invoker
1 Skywatcher Adept
1 Guard Gomazoa
1 Lighthouse Chronologist

I felt the chronologist was good for the deck as it allowed me a extra turn, also i managed to get it off first pick, lucky me indeed, now let's get to the spells of the deck

2 Lay Bare
1 Unified Will
1 Regress
1 Fleeting Distraction
1 Deprive
1 Narcolepsy
1 Distortion Strike
1 Prophetic Prism
1 Keening Stone
1 Time of Heroes
1 Guard Duty

Now the keening stone i managed to get passed to me was useful for sure, as it allowed me to go a second strategy when i got it into play, mill the damn opponent which worked well with the chronologist which i combo'ed off once.

Now let's get down to the basics

Round 1 Vs Blue/Black Control

This wasn't actually that difficult, i managed to control the first game rather effectively, since i got both the keening stone/chronologist combo off on that round, milled him for game 1, game 2 was a similar defeat, except it took maybe 3 turns longer then usual so in the end it was a rather easy 2-0 victory for me onto round 2 then

1-0 at this point.

Round 2 vs Red/Blue Defender/Control

I absolutely blew it, i should have mulliganed to 6 on the first game since i kept a opening hand of nothing but counter magic, i felt ok though with it, it seemed to have worked, except he was countering the counter magic i used the entire match, a match i will soon wish to forget, as i was destroyed by vent sentinel both games.

1-1 at this point.

Round 3 Vs Black/Green Eldrazi

I didn't need to sling any counter spells this match, since i had my wavewatch and champion's drake's on the field, peck in for multiple points of damage and that's game 1, game 2 had a similar outcome, except 2 of the 3 drakes i drafted were on, ending it rather swiftly, i even got to use narcolespy again woot.

2-1 at this point

Round 4 Vs Mirror Match Blue Control

I got slaughtered here, i hate mirror matches sometimes, espically with blue control, both games i got hit with the opponent's wavewatch, several times, causing me to figure i was screwed, i made a mistake with not mulliganing to 6 in game 2, costing me the match and the chance at prize.

2-2 final score after the event

Overall it was a rather good draft, well worth it and all, i won't be attending this week's since i don't got the cash, however come the beginning of july it's on i will be going to all remaining rise of the eldrazi drafts in general, including the one before the M11 prerelease on saturday, so double magic weekend, Yay for me, till next time it's vergil signing off.

Friday Night Magic Results for June 11th 2010

Ok so as everyone by now knows i go to friday night magic once a week every week when i got a chance and this week was no exception, i managed to snag a chance to go this week and here is the draft pod i managed to pick up for the deck i built

Lands

9 Plains
10 Mountains

Creatures

3 Kiln Fiend
2 Battle Rattle Shaman
2 Wall of Omens
1 Knight of Cliffhaven
1 Lone Missionary
1 Caravan Escort
1 Soul's Attendant
1 Brimstone Mage
1 Lavaflume Invoker

Spells

2 Puncturing Light
1 Repel the Darkness
1 Traitorous Instinct
1 Surreal Memoir
1 Flame Slash
1 Disaster Radius
1 Staggershock
1 Forked Bolt

That was merely the decklist in which i used for the draft for this event, as i won't bother posting the rest of the pod in general since it was all crap pretty much, this was the main target i wanted for the deck, so let's get down to how i did in general.

Round 1 Vs Black Blue Vampires

Game 1 was merely a 4 land drop then spells were slung i managed to get in there with at least 12 points of damage by this point, ending the game with a dual kiln fiend/staggershock combo to move onto game 2

Game 2 was simply a forfeit by my opponent as turn 6 he decided to forefeit meaning i had won round 1 in general, nothing too big to worry about

Round 2 Vs Eldrazi R/G

Game 1 was a total slaughterfest for me, i got hit with 3/3's and 4/4's for most of the game ending it off with a giant ass eldrazi which resulted in me scooping for a change, moving onto game 2.

Game 2 was terrible still, as the giant ass eldrazi hit the field turn 9 Artisan Of Kozilek no less so this means i was screwed he returned a dread drone and i scooped.

Record 1-1 at this point

Round 3 was also eldrazi based G/B eldrazi though

Game 1 was nice for a change, opponent managed a dread drone and a couple of tokens, i cleared the path with flame slash and every burn spell i could hurl, taking out my opponent in 6 turns due to a combo of Battle Rattle/Kiln fiend/Burn Spells

Game 2 was a wreck as the eldrazi in his deck was artisan as well, bloody hell, scooped as soon as it hit the field, onto game 3.

Game 3 was a washout as well with spawn tokens hitting the field left and right thanks to dread drone/kozilek's predator and growth spasm, chumping my quick strikes leaving him time for the eldrazi on the field, swung twice with annhilator and i scoop.

Record 1-2 at this point

Round 4 5 Color Eldrazi

Game 1 was fun, swung in with cliffhaven and caravan with quick efficent strikes, blocked a few and managed to come out with the victory due to kiln fiend/burn spells

Game 2 was a fun one as well as i managed to get half my creatures on the field including my lifegainer aka Soul's Attendant, opponent sac'ed all his lands to make 2 8/8 elemental tokens, they swung in on 24 life, taking me down to 8, i swung in for the win next turn since he had only 1 land on board

2-2 at this point which ended the event.

Overall i did well this week, friday's event is one i am looking forward to as well, as most of the time, i managed to get a good draft pod, some nice spells to sling in combo with kiln fiend which is broken in this format, as soon as M11 arrives though i will be shifting gears into that since i compete in FNM's once a week usually around here, thank god though that the G20 is hitting town next week meaning i don't get to go anywhere on the friday of course, so this is of course Vergil Signing off due to the end of the event and i got nothing else to say, so see ya.
